- Constellations did serve as navigational markers/guides for early sea farers, and those on land as well.. And of course, they served as "illustrations" of various gods, deities, and other mythical characters of various ancient mythologies.
While most vehicles today rely on GPS technology to navigate through virtually any terrain, constellations can help those who have lost communications with GPS satellites and other land based guiding systems/radio transmiters, to establish an approximation of where they are so they can attempt to get back on course if circumstances permit.. Of course, that's assuming they are familiar enough with the constellations to find them beneficial. -Libby
- Constellations are mainly of importance in identifying where objects are in the sky. Modern constellations are defined by their boundaries rather than the stars they contain. The only people who really use constellations today are amateur astronomers, who use them to find particular stars and deep sky objects within the constellation's boundaries. Professional astronomers generally prefer to use an object's equatorial coordinates (right ascension and declination). -GeoffG
